From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Acai is a fruit and a dietary supplement sold over the counter at pharmacies and on the Web. Sometimes it is added to proprietary herbal blends, and other times it comes as a stand-alone active ingredient. The berry is typically not available fresh in the United States, but is sold dried as a natural food. The potential side effects of acai are not known due to lack of research. However, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommend that pregnant and breastfeeding women stay away from acai supplements until safety is established.
Acai berry products have been widely marketed for weight loss and anti-aging purposes, but there is no definitive scientific evidence to support these claims. Acai berries are known to have high levels of free radical-fighting antioxidants, as well as fiber. While they may be nutritious and good for overall health, there is no evidence that they have fat burning abilities, or that they are healthier than other fruits and vegetables such as blueberries or raspberries.

Acai Side Effects
Since acai berry diet pills are considered nutritional supplements rather than drugs, they are not well-regulated by the FDA. Acai products are not proven safe or effective before they are made available to consumers. There may be side effects that are not noted on the packaging.
While there are no known side effects of acai supplements as of yet, many acai weight loss drugs contain other ingredients that can cause adverse reactions. Caffeine, for example, is a typical diet pill additive and can cause elevated heart rate, upset stomach, anxiety, insomnia and more. It can also cause dependency, leading to withdrawal symtoms when discontinued.
There are no known food or supplement interactions with Acai, but the NIH recommends consulting a doctor before mixing it with other medications.
About Drug Side Effects
Acai Health Benefits
Laboratory studies have focused on acai berry’s potential antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are nutrients such as vitamins A, C, E and lycopene that protect cells from damaging effects of chemical reactions with oxygen. Laboratory studies have also shown that acai berries demonstrate anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activity. However, other evidence suggests that supplementing the diet with antioxidants does not help to prevent disease.
Acai Allergic Reactions
Those with pollen allergies may be more prone to experiencing an allergic reaction to acai berries. The acai berry can aggravate an existing pollen allergy and cause serious symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, problems swallowing, swelling of the lips, swelling of the tongue and swelling of the throat. People who are allergic to palm may also be more likely to experience an allergic reaction from acai. Some less severe symptoms include rash, gastrointestinal problems, sneezing, coughing, watery eyes and feeling itchy.
Acai Precautions and Warnings
- Although no specific side effects are associated with acai, there has been little research on the safety of acai supplements. Additionally, it is known that acai and other fruits that contain high levels of antioxidants can interfere with the anticoagulant drug warfarin as well as other medications.
- Consuming acai might affect MRI test results.
- In addition, the acai supplement industry has been fraught with complaints of false advertising and shady business practices, causing some consumers to pay more than they were initially led to believe they would. The "free trial" scam has led to numerous unwanted bank withdrawals.
