From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Ambien®, or zolpidem, is a sleep aid medication manufactured by Sanofi. Ambien® is used to treat insomnia, and slows brain activity to allow for better sleep. Ambien® comes as a regular or extended release capsule (Ambien CR), and is meant to be taken when patients have at least seven to eight hours to devote to sleep.
Prescription Ambien® can cost up to $90 a month, depending on whether or not a patient has prescription drug insurance. There are generic versions of zolpidem that may be less expensive alternatives to Ambien®. Ambien® coupons, drug manufacturer's coupon rebates, Ambien® printable discount offers and prescription support programs can help reduce the cost of Ambien® prescriptions.

Ambien Coupons and Patient Assistance Programs
Sanofi patient assistance programs do not currently cover Ambien®, and the company is not offering any coupons to the general public. However, there is a possibility that physicians can provide free samples of Ambien®, or have unadvertised coupons on hand. Even when these options are not available, there are a couple of ways to save on Ambien®:
- Xubex pharmaceuticals sells Ambien® at a discount through their patient assistance program. In order to get Ambien® from Xubex, patients are required to fill out an application and then mail or fax it in. The program is open to patients of all income levels, and applicants may have prescription drug insurance, including Medicare. Xubex has their own website, or patients can call 866-699-8239 for more information.
- Rx Outreach sells discount Ambien® to patients who earn less than 300% of the federal poverty level, with or without insurance. Patients can download the application from the Rx Outreach website, or call 800-769-3880 to have it mailed.
Ambien® is contains the generic drug zolpidem, and is in a class of drugs called sedative hypnotics. Ambien® non-narcotic sleep medication is available by prescription only, and treats insomnia. Zolpidem can cause dependence, and those who quit suddenly may experience withdrawal symptoms. Common drug side effects include dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness, nausea, throat irritation, nose irritation, upset stomach, sluggishness, muscle aches and headache.
Ambien® is available in two formulations:
- Ambien zolpidem tartrate CIV tablets 5 mg and 10 mg
- Ambien CR zolpidem tartrate extended release CIV tablets 6.25 mg and 12.5 mg
