Lipitor® is a statin that helps to reduce the LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, in a patient's blood while at the same time increasing the HDL ("good") cholesterol. Liptor is typically used to help prevent stroke and heart attack, as well as other cardiovascular diseases. Lipitor® is available by prescription only.

Due to high prescription costs associated with Lipitor® and other drugs, manufacturer Pfizer, Inc. offers patient assistance programs to help out their patients who have financial difficulties. These programs may help consumers get free Lipitor®. For those who do not qualify for Pfizer patient assistance, drug savings cards may be obtained through other sources.

Lipitor Patient Assistance Programs

Two Pfizer patient assistance programs offer patients Lipitor® at no cost:[2]

  • Pfizer Connection to Care gives free Lipitor® to those who do not have health insurance that covers prescription drugs and meet certain income requirements. The company sends the Lipitor directly to doctor's offices, where patients may pick them up.
  • Pfizer MAINTAIN provides Lipitor® to those with limited incomes who have prescription drug coverage under Medicare Part D. The Lipitor® is distributed to patients via their doctors' offices.

Patients interested in these Lipitor® programs will be required to fill out an application, which can be downloaded online through the official Pfizer website, or by calling 866-706-2400. Both the patient and his or her doctor will need to fill out the necessary information. Patients can expect to receive information on whether or not they are accepted into the program within 3 to 4 weeks of mailing in their application.[2]

Additional Lipitor Savings Programs

  • The Pfizer Pfriends card offers a discount on Lipitor® at the pharmacy when taken in along with a doctor's prescription. Patients can request an application at 1-866-706-2400 or download it from the Web.[3]
  • Lipitor® also offers a Lipitor® Co-Pay Card, good for savings of up to $600 a year. Patients who have a prescription co-pay of less than $54 a month pay only $4, while patients with a co-pay over $54 save $50 a month. Patients can submit a request for this card online through the official Lipitor® website.[4]

Lipitor Information

Lipitor® helps manage high cholesterol and also helps reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes, as well as other heart complications, especially in those patients that suffer from coronary heart disease or Type 2 diabetes.

Patients taking Lipitor® may experience side effects. Common adverse reactions may include diarrhea, mild nausea, and joint pain. Patients experiencing the more serious side effects caused by the drug should consult their doctor. These include, but are not limited to jaundice, fever, unusual tiredness, weight gain, swelling, dark colored urine, etc. The medication works best when patients take steps to lead more active, healthy lifestyles as a part of their course of treatment. This includes eating a low-cholesterol diet.[5]
