From Pharmacy Drug Guide
Nexium®, also referred to as the "Purple Pill," is a prescription medication designed to treat certain stomach and esophagus problems, including heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Nexium® contains esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the amount of acid made in the stomach. It can reduce the risk of developing an ulcer among patients who are taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
The cost of Nexium® may be covered by insurance, and co-pay support may be available to insurance holders. The Nexium® Savings Card can reduce co-pays to as little as $18 a month, or even free for those with no insurance. Savings are accessible from the official Nexium® site, and coupons may be available from doctors and pharmacies.

Nexium Patient Assistance Programs and Coupons
- Nexium® coupons and discounts are available through the official manufacturer's site. The Nexium® Savings Card may reduce the cost of Nexium® prescriptions by up to $50. For patients with prescription coverage and a co-pay higher than $25, up to 12 prescriptions may be reduced to as low as $18. Without prescription coverage, AstraZeneca covers the first $50 of each purchase for a total maximum discount of $600. Patients covered by Medicaid, Medicare, and other government-funded prescription assistance programs do not qualify for this offer. Nexium® Savings Card is not valid in Massachusetts. The card may be obtained from health care providers, or by calling 1-800-4 NEXIUM.
- Patients may also apply for assistance through the AstraZeneca patient prescription assistance program: AZ&Me. Uninsured individuals with an annual income under $35,000 or families of four with an annual income under $70,000 may qualify for this program. Those with Medicare Part D who met the same requirements can also receive assistance. However, Medicare recipients must have already spent 3% of their income on prescription drugs before they will be able to qualify. Patients can determine eligibility online or by contacting AstraZeneca at 1-800-AZandMe. Some portions of the application may require a doctor's assistance.
- According to the Nexium® website, patients who order their Nexium® through the mail may be able to save up to $100 per year. Many insurance providers will cover prescriptions from mail-order pharmacies. To learn more, patients are advised to consult their benefits providers.
Nexium® is a brand name for esomeprazole, a prescription proton pump inhibitor used to treat symptoms of conditions involving excessive stomach acid, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Nexium® decreases the amount of acid produced by the stomach, and relieves accompanying symptoms such as heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and persistent cough. It also works to promote healing of esophageal damage caused by stomach acid, and is prescribed to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers in patients on continuous nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) therapy. It is also used in the treatment of heartburn and indigestion.
Nexium® comes in a delayed-release capsule containing 20 or 40 mg of esomeprazole for oral administration. It may be prescribed once or twice daily, depending on the specific course of treatment, and is usually taken at least one hour before meals.
An FDA review of Nexium® and other brands of proton pump inhibitors determined that this type of medication may increase the risk of bone fractures when taken in high dosages or for periods of time greater than one year. Prevacid® and Prilosec® were also cited in the FDA’s warning.
