Provigil® is a prescription medication used to treat excessive sleepiness (ES), which is caused by conditions such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and shift work sleep disorder. It is the brand name for modafinil, and is used in combination with other sleep disorder treatments. It is classified by the DEA as a Category IV controlled substance.[1] This means it has a lower abuse potential relative to the category III drugs.[2]

Free Provigil® samples may be available through a patient's doctor, or in the form of patient assistance programs. These programs also provide free Provigil® to patients who are experiencing financial difficulties.

Provigil Background

Provigil® is manufactured by Cephalon, Inc., and is typically administered once daily by mouth, with food or without food. As with other medications, Provigil® may cause adverse reactions in certain patients, the most common symptoms being dizziness, sweating, nausea, headaches, dry mouth, appetite loss, heartburn, and constipation. Serious side effects include rash, hives, anxiety, hallucinations, an irregular heartbeat, problems breathing, or a swollen face, tongue, or throat. Patients who experience these serious side effects are encouraged by the National Institutes of Health to seek medical attention.[3]

How to Get Provigil Samples

  • Provigil® samples may be available through a patient's doctor or healthcare provider. Occasionally, Cephalon, Inc. will offer free samples of their new and existing medicines to doctors. Healthcare providers may be able to contact the company directly to ask for samples.
  • Another way for patients to get free Provigil® is through the CephalonCares® Foundation patient assistance programs. These are only available to qualified individuals who have lower income and no prescription coverage. Provigil® may be available at no cost for up to a year. In order to qualify, patients can make no more than $32,670 a year for individuals, $44,130 for couples, $55,590 for a family of three, $67,050 for a family of four, and $78,510 for a family of five. An application for the program is available to download, print, and mail in through the official CephalonCares® Foundation website.[7]
