Risperdal® is an atypical anti-psychotic medication that works by altering certain chemicals in the brain. It comes as a tablet to be swallowed whole, a dissolving tablet for those with trouble swallowing pills, and as a liquid. Dosages usually begin relatively low, and then a physician may raise the amount as needed. It may take weeks for Risperdal® to take full effect, and it will not cure any illnesses--it is only used to manage symptoms.
About 10% of patients taking Risperdal® will experience side effects such as somnolence, increased appetite, fatigue, rhinitis, upper respiratory tract infection, vomiting, coughing, urinary incontinence, increased saliva, constipation, fever, tremors, muscle stiffness, abdominal pain, anxiety, nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, rash, restlessness, and indigestion.
