Zyrtec® is an over-the-counter medication manufactured by McNeil Consumer Healthcare that treats both seasonal (outdoor) and perennial (indoor) allergy symptoms. Seasonal allergies are usually caused by tree and other plant pollens, while indoor allergies are more often caused by pet dander, dust, and mold. Zyrtec® used to require a prescription, but is now only available over the counter.

Free samples of Zyrtec® can allow consumers to try it out before purchasing. Free Zyrtec® samples are frequently available through special offers on various store websites, such as Wal*Mart. One way to save significantly on Zyrtec® is to purchase it in one of its many generic forms, including supermarket and pharmacy brands. Zyrtec® is also available with the decongestant pseudoephedrine HCl, called Zyrtec-D®, which is usually behind pharmacy counters due to restrictions placed on pseudoephedrine.[1]

Zyrtec® Background

Zyrtec® is the brand name for cetirizine hydrochloride, an antihistamine that treats allergy symptoms in adults and children, providing relief for runny nose, sneezing, itchy nose, throat, and watery, itchy eyes. Common side effects of Zyrtec® range from dry mouth to dizziness and mild fatigue.[3]

Zyrtec® was first approved by the FDA in 1996 and is now widely available in generic forms, including numerous store brands. The drug blocks histamine (H-1) receptors in cells, which are responsible for causing symptoms of allergies. Zyrtec® causes less drowsiness than other antihistamines, such as Benadryl.[3]
